The Poor Man's Pinball Podcast

I commute to work daily, 25 minutes to work and 25 minutes back home. I refuse to listen commercial-filled radio, and don't always feel like listening to music. I suppose I could listen to audiobooks, but instead I prefer to listen to pinball related content. Recently the podcast I have gravitated to is the Poor Man's Pinball Podcast. As far back as 2013, I was listening to Pinball Soul podcasts, and I loved getting news and opinion from Josh Blood (he even mentioned my blog in one episode). I was bummed when someone else took over and the podcasts slowed and then stopped coming. A void existed in getting my pinball news and opinions, but it didn't last long. Fortunately I found my way to Nate Shivers' Coast 2 Coast Pinball Podcast, and that kept me sated until Head2Head Pinball Podcast with Martin and Ryan came along in 2017. I loved it, especially because the episodes were lengthy and often quite hilarious. Eventually more podcasts started popping up, and Slap Save Pinball Podcast became another favorite, although Coast 2 Coast has since called it quits.

No pinball podcast has entertained me more, however, than the Poor Man's Pinball Podcast. Ian and Drew are the hosts and are based out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They call themselves "the sloppiest show on the internet". I would call them unscripted and free-flowing, but I guess sloppy works too. I first started listening to them after they posted Episode 7, in which they said good things about The Hobbit, which seems to get ripped on a lot by others. Something else that I found intriguing was that Drew had an Alice Cooper's Nightmare Castle and loved it, and at the time I was on the fence about whether to buy it or not, so their opinion on the game was one of the deciding factors I leaned on. They also did an interview with Charlie and Bug from Spooky Pinball, the makers of ACNC, in Episode 21.

Make no mistake, this is an adult show that doesn't take itself too seriously, which is what holds a large amount of appeal for me. They always talk about what they are drinking when the show starts, and there's certainly no shortage of swearing. They love to hear from fans, especially drink recipes and Dad Jokes. Some of their segments include: "Love Letters", a sexy message from listeners on a variety of subjects; "Poor Man's Pinball Podcast Personal Pinball News", in which they talk about their latest personal pinball happenings, such as buying or selling games, fixing games etc.; "Top 5", in which they choose a pinball-related question and each of them give their top 5 answers; and "The Tribe", where they induct members into their inner circle based on defined criteria. They've even got a cool logo created by Christopher Franchi, who created the artwork for The Beatles, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Munsters machines.

Lately Ian and Drew have added another podcast called F*@kit Friday, in which they talk about things that are not pinball related, such as shows they are watching and stories about their drunken adventures. I listen to this show as well. In fact, I even wrote an email to them and got a personal response from Ian. This surprised me because they must get quite a few fan emails, so I wouldn't have expected a response, much less a personal one. These guys are good dudes, genuinely funny (I laugh frequently on my commute while other drivers look at me like I'm insane), and Ian and Drew have an excellent dynamic going between them. Interviews are informative and they also attend shows and talk about things they've seen such as new pinball releases. They are passionate about pinball, which you can tell because they like playing (almost) any game.

In conclusion, I hope they keep their momentum going and continue to offer great content. And who knows...maybe someday I will be made a Tribe member myself!
